NCIAVHR Meets with the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Today, Wednesday, the Chairman and members of the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) met with the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Mohsen Yahya Taleb, at the Judicial Complex in the interim capital, Aden.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Commission, Judge Ahmed Al-Maflahi, reviewed the results of the Commission’s visits to courts and detention centers in several governorates, the status of the military judiciary, and the Commission’s observations on delays in addressing several military cases. He also presented the Commission’s vision to ensure access to justice and achieve redress for victims.

The meeting also discussed the latest human rights developments related to the judiciary and emphasized the importance of establishing specialized courts and prosecution offices to handle human rights cases referred by the Commission.

Efforts made by the Commission to engage the international community and specialized international entities to assist in training judicial personnel in human rights by international human rights standards were also discussed.

Judge Mohsen Taleb praised the efforts of the Commission, highlighting the importance of its national role in safeguarding the rights of human rights violation victims in Yemen. He confirmed the Council’s readiness to cooperate with the Commission on issues concerning citizens and ensuring justice, and to continue coordination to support the Commission’s efforts in executing its mandates and responsibilities as per its establishment decree.

In a related context, the Chairman and members of the Commission discussed with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Judge Dr. Ali Al-Awash, several field observations on the litigation process and delays in procedures in various courts, and ways to address them in line with fair trial principles. The two sides also discussed measures aimed at reducing human rights violations.

Judge Al-Awash commended the efforts of the Commission in investigating human rights violations and expressed the Court’s readiness to cooperate with the Commission to facilitate its tasks.

The meetings were attended by Commission members Judge Dr. Dia Mahirez, Judge Hezam Al-Morisi, Judge Jihad Abdulrasool, Judge Nasser Al-Awadhi, Secretary-General of the Judicial Council Judge Dr. Ali Atboush, and the Director of the Council Chairman’s Office, Judge Ghaleb Fareed.
