Amman | 17 September 2024

Today, members of Yemen’s National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) met with the Netherlands Ambassador to Yemen, Janet Sieben, and the EU Ambassador, Gabriel Munuera Viñals in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

During the meeting, the Commission’s Vice President, Judge Hussein Al-Mashdali, along with Commission members Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari and Judge Sabah Al-Alwani, presented the key findings of their investigation into recent violations, which are included in the Commission’s 12th report, published in early September. They also discussed recommendations aimed at improving the human rights environment in the country.

The meeting covered the human rights situation in Yemen, the Commission’s efforts in investigating violations, enforcing accountability—especially regarding civil rights and the rights of detainees—and the role of civil society.

The Netherlands Ambassador affirmed her country’s and the EU’s continued monitoring of the Commission’s significant, diligent work in investigating violations, their presence on the ground, and their efforts to release detainees.

She also expressed the Netherlands’ and the EU’s commitment to strengthening Yemen’s state institutions, contributing to institutional development, and supporting the Commission’s work to reach victims across all areas of the country to curb violations and improve conditions.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Netherlands Ambassador Merieke Werda, political attaché Tessa Schulma, and the Head of the Political Section of the EU Mission to Yemen.
