NCIAVHR Meets with Hodeida Local and Security Authorities to Examine Detention Conditions of Prisoners

The Vice-Chairman of the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) confirmed that one of the most important goals pursued by the Commission is to continuously monitor the human rights situation and investigate abuses against civilians in violation of international humanitarian law in Hodeida governorate.
Judge Hussein Al-Mashdali explained in the expanded meeting which included members of the Commission and the leadership of the local authority and the security services in Hodeida governorate that the Commission seeks to cooperate with law enforcement institutions to ensure fair trials by monitoring the condition of detention centers and detainees.
In the meeting, the directors of the districts of Hays, Al-Khawkhah, and Al-Tahita discussed the need of citizens in the districts of Al-Hodeida governorate, especially the areas of confrontations, for protection and access to humanitarian aid, and the activation of the judiciary in the liberated districts to ensure the application of the law and alleviate the suffering of citizens.
For his part, the governorate Police Director, Colonel Najeeb Waraq, expressed his welcome to the visit of the Commission to the areas and villages of the districts of Hodeida governorate to observe what the front areas are exposed to, from the continued explosion of mines and the fall of various projectiles as a result of the shelling that affects them.
Colonel Waraq expressed the readiness of the security apparatus in the governorate to facilitate the tasks of the Commission’s field researchers in reaching victims, collecting information, and preserving evidence.
Within the framework of the visit, the members of the Commission and the accompanying delegation visited the detention centers in the Police Department of Al-Khawkhah district and the Al-Qataba and Abu Zahr police stations and were briefed on the conditions of (100) detainees, including (4) women.
The team also inspected the rooms and sections of the detention centers and documented the prisoners’ needs related to health and food rights and fair trial guarantees.
