Taiz | July 18, 2024
The National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) held a meeting on Thursday at the Appeals Prosecution Office in Taiz with several representatives from the judicial authority in the governorate. The meeting reviewed the Commission’s key observations regarding the conditions of prisons and detention centers.
The attendees, including Judge Abdulrahman Qasim, Deputy West Prosecutor, Judge Mohammed Al-Ra’ini, Deputy East Prosecutor, and Judge Abdul Fattah Al-Qumeiri, Deputy Criminal Prosecution, discussed several files investigated by the Commission, including cases related to the specialized criminal prosecution in Taiz.
The meeting also discussed mechanisms for continued cooperation between the Commission and the judicial authority in Taiz aimed at ensuring fair trials and access to justice for all citizens, especially amidst the ongoing war in the governorate and the high volume of cases in the courts.
The judges highlighted recent steps and achievements in moving files sent to the criminal prosecution and referring them to trial, especially after the decision to form the prosecution, and the increased workload during 2024 due to various reasons, some related to the conflict such as displacement and housing issues. The judiciary in Taiz welcomed the Commission’s follow-up on these files to ensure cooperation in enforcing the law and upholding its sovereignty.
The Commission team was also briefed on the challenges facing the litigation process and judicial performance in the East and West Prosecutor’s Offices and Al-Ta’izia, particularly regarding buildings, suitable spaces, and the needs of all prosecutions and their departments, along with other necessary resources, especially given the destruction of the judicial complex in Al-Mudhaffar District.
