A Press Release on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists

Every year, November 2nd marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. This important international occasion serves as a reminder of the rights of journalists and the need to address and hold accountable those who violate these rights.

During its previous work, the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) has documented shocking testimonies and sequential information about the extensive violations suffered by this important segment of society. These violations include infringements on their right to life, physical and moral safety, and the significant harm they have endured.

The Commission continues to conduct effective investigations into all allegations of violations against journalists, identifying individuals and entities responsible in order to refer them to the judicial authorities for prosecution. Ending impunity for crimes against journalists is of utmost urgency to ensure freedom of expression and access to information for all citizens.

In this context, the Commission refers to its eleventh report issued in September of last year, which addressed violations related to attacks on freedom of opinion and expression in various regions of Yemen. The report included details of different incidents involving journalists and implicated multiple parties.

According to the testimonies of victims and witnesses heard by the Commission, the violations they have suffered range from harassment, intimidation, surveillance, illegal censorship, abduction, enforced disappearance, torture, and other forms of inhumane treatment.

On this global occasion, the Commission urges all parties and entities to make further efforts to prevent all forms of violence against journalists and media workers. It also calls for swift internal accountability measures against those involved in committing these violations.
