NCIAVHR Listens to Prisoners in Al-Shabakah Prison in Ash-Shamayatayn District

The National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) listened to several prisoners and detainees in the Shabakah prison and detention center under the management of the police in the Ash-Shamayatayn district in the south of Taiz governorate.
The Commission’s team, in response to the demands of the detainees and their families, visited Al-Shabakah prison to observe the humanitarian conditions of the inmates, listen to their demands, and inspect the prison conditions and the level of compliance with national laws and international treaties.
During the field visit, the Commission’s team also met with the prison director, Major Mohammed Al-Zubairi, who expressed appreciation for the Commission’s continuous monitoring of the difficult conditions of the inmates and highlighted their urgent needs, especially with the onset of the winter season which is known for its severe cold in this mountainous district.
Moreover, the team inspected the cells where a total of 90 prisoners and detainees on different charges were staying during the visit, and the sanitation and cleanliness levels, and examined the nature and level of nutrition, health rights, medication, and prevalent diseases among the inmates.
The Commission also listened to the legal demands of several inmates and their right to a fair trial without delay, the provision of a suitable place for their detention period, sufficient food, and a specialized doctor at the detention center to provide necessary medical assistance and care.
Additionally, the Commission carried out another visit to the police management in the Ash-Shamayatayn district, where they met with Deputy Police Director Major Salah Al-Abssi, reviewed the lists of detainees totaling 25, and listened to them while examining their legal status as per the national law and international treaties ratified by Yemen.
