Riyadh | February 5, 2024
The Chairman and members of the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) met today with the US Ambassador to Yemen, Mr. Stephen Fagin, at the embassy headquarters in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
The Chairman of the Commission, Judge Ahmed Al-Maflahi, reviewed the recent developments in human rights in Yemen, especially in the areas that are still conflict-ridden and where victims continue to fall due to recent events.
Judge Al-Maflahi also addressed the lack of commitment to implementing the declared humanitarian ceasefire, and the ongoing investigation process to reach the victims in all Yemeni regions in the hope of achieving justice for them through national judiciary and transitional justice mechanisms.
The meeting also discussed the importance of strengthening Yemen’s state institutions to fulfill their role in providing services and protecting human rights through increased regional and international support, and cooperation of political components, social entities, and civil society.
For his part, Ambassador Stephen Fagin confirmed the interest of the American side and emphasized the importance of accountability based on a proper process that relies on documentation and recording violations to achieve accountability in the future in a way that Yemenis see fit, especially in serious violations.
Mr. Fagin also pointed out the long time it may take to collect information and evidence, as it represents the entry point for any process of justice for victims and achieving peace based on human rights, as an important task undertaken by the Commission and the basis for future cooperation with it upon which the peace process in Yemen will be built.
The meeting was attended by members of the Commission Judge Hussein Al-Mashdali, Judge Israa Al-Muqtari, on one side, and Deputy US Ambassador Angeta Tegbron and Political Affairs Officer at the Embassy Houston Harris on the other side.
